Attendees of National Night Out enjoyed food, fun, and community on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the lawn and pavilion adjacent to the Northumberland County Sheriff's Office in Heathsville, VA. The event was open to the public, and food, drink, and activities were complimentary.
The NAPS tent featured the "Duchess of Ditches" robe and crown, raising awareness about the ecological hazards caused by roadside litter. Some visitors donned the costume, and others signed up for the NAPS Creek Cleanup scheduled for Sunday Oct. 6.
Other community organizations, fire and rescue agencies, the library Techmobile, a virtual-reality safe driving game, and several Sheriff's Office vehicles were also on display.
Northumberland County Sheriff "Doc" Lyons grilled hot dogs while volunteers served snow cones, lemonade, popcorn and chips to attendees. Kids enjoyed the moon bounce, while folks of all ages played corn hole and other games.
This was the first year that Northumberland County participated in this national event, and the Northumberland Sheriff's Office plans to participate again next year.
